LONDON—The U.K. government sanctioned Alina Kabaeva, a Russian retired Olympic rhythmic gymnast, citing her alleged close relationship to President Vladimir Putin.
The U.K., in a statement Friday, said she was “rumored” to be his girlfriend. U.S. officials believe her to be his girlfriend and the mother of at least three of his children, though Washington has held off sanctioning her, The Wall Street Journal previously reported.
